Creature Table Series 2018
The Creature tables are a series inspired by forms present in nature, then interpreted through the slippery mental state that occupies the space between wakefulness and sleep where the mind combines unrelated objects in unexpected ways. Pulling from and combining references such as an antelopes scapula or the pedipalps of a scorpion to create a unique language of form. The result is a series of objects that are at once captivating and slightly unsettling. They are reminiscent yet unplaceable while maintaining a lofty elegance.
The stem table is a small beverage table. The sculpted bronze base coalesces into a single stem that supports the 9 1/4" diameter circular top. There are three distinct versions of the stem table available. The first features a natural bronze base and ivory colored marmorino top. The second also has the natural bronze base but it is toped with a solid bronze disc. The disc has been hammered to achieve a dappled shagreen like texture. The third table has a rich burnt umber patinated base and charcoal tinted marmorino top. Both the bronze and marmorino tops are finished with natural oils and a mixture of carnauba and beeswax.
The moon table is an elegant tripedal side table. The cast marmorino top has been oiled and waxed to a polished bone like finish and floats on natural bronze creature legs. The legs are sculpted and cast in solid bronze. They are then hand polished and left raw to oxidize over time. The bronze will darken and become richer as it oxidizes.
The pillow table is a low coffee table in the Creature Table series. The top is cast marmorino which is finished with natural oils and waxed by hand to a polished bone like finish. The complex curvature of the top is reminiscent of a worn river stone or “pillow” and creates a highly tactile form. The legs are sculpted solid booze that have been patinated to a rich burnt umber with highlights of natural bronze. The bronze is then oiled and waxed to a satin finish.
Creature Table Series 2016
Creature Table 001
The tall occasional Creature table features three distinct sculpted bronze legs and a turned oak top. The legs have been polished by hand and then patinated to achieve the archetypal antique bronze color. The white oak top is turned on a wood lathe and ebonized with a solution of black tea and iron wool. Both the top and the legs are rubbed with natural oils and a mixture of carnauba and beeswax.
Creature Table 011 - 013
Creature Tables 011-013 are one of a kind experiments in creating tactile curvaceous forms. The shape of each top is based on the naturally occurring features of the 5" thick elm slabs they are cut from. The tops are entirely cut and shaped by hand. Once the form has been established the deep pitch black quality of the finish is achieved by carefully charring the surface with a blowtorch using a Japanese technique know as Shou Shugi Ban. Each top has its own unique sculpted bronze Creature legs. The cast bronze legs are polished and then patinated. They are then hand rubbed with natural oils and a beeswax finish.
Creature Table 021 - 023
The Small circular Creature Side Tables combine hand turned north American white oak tops and solid bronze legs. The tops have been ebonized using a solution of tea, vinegar and iron wool. The technique takes advantage of the natural tannins in the wood to create a rich black surface. The tops are then finished by hand with natural oils. After finishing the tops are fitted to the bronze legs. The legs are individually sand cast from the original sculpted forms. The legs are patinated and hand rubbed with natural oil and beeswax to achieve a deep burnt umber satin finish.
